Jonathan R. Agger was born in Keighley, U.K. in 1970. He graduated from UMIST with first class honours in Chemistry with French in 1992, having spent 18 months working in the fields of silicon chemistry for Dow Corning in Belgium and synthetic organic chemistry for Rhône Poulenc-Rorer (now Aventis) in France. He obtained his PhD from UMIST in 1996 working in the field of semiconductor quantum confinement under the supervision of Professors Mike Anderson and Martin Pemble. During post-doctoral research appointments between the groups of Mike Anderson at UMIST and João Rocha at the University of Aveiro, Portugal, he used multiple-quantum solid-state NMR to study cation siting in microporous materials and atomic force microscopy to study crystal growth. In 1999 he was appointed to the position of Research Fellow of the UMIST Centre for Microporous Materials. Subsequently, in February of that year he was awarded an EPSRC Advanced Research Fellowship which commenced in November 1999. The award has been used to research crystallisation processes in porous materials using atomic force microscopy and simulation techniques. Having jointly organised the XXIV Annual British Zeolite Association Conference in Edinburgh in 2001, he was elected onto the BZA committee where he currently holds the post of FEZA representative. In 2004 he took up a full lectureship at the University of Leeds and was awarded an honourary lectureship at the University of Manchester.
In his spare time he enjoys reading, scuba diving and is a season ticket holder at Everton FC.
