Arthur Garforth joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at UMIST in 1998 after a brief stay at the University of Huddersfield in the Centre
for Thermal Studies. He is a key part of UMIST’s Environmental Strategy Group, established to promote and co-ordinate environmental teaching and
research activities across UMIST. With his two colleagues in Physics and Management, ‘scene-setting’ lectures on environmental topics are delivered
campus wide. Since inception in 1999, the courses have grown from 60 to over 240 undergraduates in five departments.
His research interests include catalysis, recycling and the development of cleaner processes. One established research area is the catalytic conversion of polyolefins to useful refinery feedstocks and the work has extended to include collaboration with researchers in Japan, Spain and UK. Another area of particular interest is in alternative routes to manufacture fine speciality chemicals. The use of traditional reagents such as mineral acids and toxic metal reagents is widespread and has many drawbacks, such as, the formation of large volumes of acid waste and poor reaction selectivity. The use of heterogeneous catalysts, such as zeolites, affords many advantages. Arthur employs FTIR, pH and Raman probes along with reaction calorimetery to follow these complex reactions in-situ. Another joint project with colleagues in Physics and Chemistry, (NERC funded), investigates atmospheric aerosol composition in an effort to understand its effect on atmospheric chemistry, climate and human health. More recently Arthur has embarked on a programme of research to develop greater porosity in microporous catalysts for application in liquid phase catalysis. Other interests include the study of basic properties of catalysts when irradiated by microwaves in association with the Materials Centre and the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He is currently secretary of the British Zeolite Association. |
